Steve chats with Steve O’Connor, editor of Library Management and the author of Library Management in Disruptive Times.

Steve O’Connor is a seasoned international speaker, workshop presenter, editor, writer, consultant and, of course, librarian.  He wrote the book on scenario planning for libraries and other organizations (Imagining Your Library’s Future Chandos which is now also being published in the Chinese language by the National Library of China). His latest book is titled Library Management in Disruptive Times (published by Facet). He is a long standing journal editor (Library Management), the author of over 70 articles and a frequent presenter at international library and information management conferences. Most recently, he has been working on a feasibility study for advanced leadership at Charles Sturt University where he is an Adjunct Professor. Steve’s passion is to foster creative and dynamic imaginative communities that deliver positive and measureable results for their Library’s customers. Understanding that there are many paths to the Future is crucial for choosing well and to dealing, in an engaged fashion, with change management.

Steve chats with Kyle Cassidy, author and photographer, about his new book This Is What a Librarian Looks Like.

Kyle Cassidy is an award winning journalist and author of the photo books “Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes” and “War Paint: Tattoo Culture & the Armed Forces.” He also photographed the 2015 book “Geek Knits” by Joan of Dark and viral photo essays on the Occupy Wall Street protestors and the scientists who flew the New Horizons mission to Pluto. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, stage actress Trillian Stars and three cats, one of whom is famous on the Internet. He began photographing librarians in 2014.

Guest host Troy Swanson chats with Jeremy Shermak about differentiating journalism from “the media,”  professional ethics, and both recognizing and accepting our biases.

Jeremy Shermak is a doctoral student in the School of Journalism and Moody College of Communication Doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. He has nearly 20 years of professional experience as a college professor, media analyst, and journalist. He earned a B.S. in Informatics from Indiana University, an M.A. in Writing Pedagogy from DePaul University, and an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Missouri. Shermak’s research interests include the use of social media during live coverage, including sports and weather events. For his thesis, he examined the use of Twitter by newspaper sports beat reporters during live-game events. His theoretical interests include spiral of silence, deliberative democracy, and uses and gratifications.

Troy A. Swanson is Teaching & Learning Librarian and Library Department Chair at Moraine Valley Community College. Troy is the author or editor of several books and articles including co-editor of Not Just Where to Click: Teaching Students How to Think About Information which received the Ilene F. Rockman Publication of the Year Award from ARCL’s Instruction Section.

Steve chats with Susan Hildreth about her path to librarianship, her work as former director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, her current role as Professor Practice at the University of Washington’s iSchool, and her work as ALA Treasurer and at the Aspen Institute.

Susan Hildreth is the inaugural Gates-funded Professor of Practice at the Information School at the University of Washington. She also serves as the fellow for the Aspen Institute’s Dialogue on Public Libraries in the Communications and Society Program. She served as the Executive Director of the Peninsula Library System, the Pacific Library Partnership and the Califa Group from Mach 2015 through June 2016. Previously, she served as the director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a presidentially appointed and Senate confirmed position, from January 2011 through January 2015. Susan is the former Seattle Public Library city librarian and the state librarian of California, appointed by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. She also served as the city librarian of the San Francisco Public Library and in other leadership positions in California public libraries.

Knowledge School Partnership

University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science Teams with Circulating Ideas on the Knowledge School Initiative

January 10, 2017

Columbia, South Carolina

Today the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science announced a partnership with the Circulating Ideas podcast and creator Steve Thomas. Over the next year the School will sponsor the podcast as well provide content. The content will be related to the School of Library and Information Science “Knowledge School Initiative.”

The Knowledge School initiative seeks to advance the conversation around LIS education and the iSchool movement. The initiative focuses on the community impact obligations of LIS programs.

“At South Carolina we are interested in what comes after information – we are focused on how we as a school and a field use information and technology to improve communities. It’s not enough to do good research and teaching, as a field we must make life better for people in our schools, universities, towns, and institutions,” said R. David Lankes, director of the South Carolina school.

Lankes added, “It is all about making ideas real, and improving ideas by sharing them with the profession and our colleagues. Circulating Ideas makes the perfect forum to engage in these conversations. What Steve has done is create a very powerful place for conversation.”

“David has been an inspiration to me for the entire run of the podcast, so the opportunity to work with him to help promote and grow the Knowledge School was an easy decision to make. The ensuing conversations will fit in perfectly with the show’s existing mission to publicize and celebrate the great work librarians are doing to keep libraries relevant and vibrant.”

Steve chats with Keith Michael Fiels, Executive Director of the American Library Association.

Keith Michael Fiels

Keith Michael Fiels has served as Executive Director of the American Library Association since 2002. Under his leadership, ALA has established a new Office for Library Advocacy, dramatically expanded the Association’s professional publishing and professional development program, brought thousands of library Friends groups into the Association worked on a major community engagement initiative for libraries and, most recently, established a new ALA Center for the Future of Libraries.

Prior to coming to ALA, he served as Director of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, where he was in charge of state and federal programs for libraries. In Massachusetts, he led efforts to secure over $500 million in state funds for public library reconstruction and access for libraries of all types to shared online resources and networks.

He has also served as President of the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies, as the founding director of a library consortium in New Jersey, and as a planning consultant for the New York and New Jersey State Libraries. He has worked as a public and school librarian and as an independent library consultant. He is co-author of a number of books on planning and technology, and has spoken about libraries at hundreds of conferences, workshops and other public events.
